Marissa Nadler – Dead City Emily
Dreamfolk seer of the American Gothic unveils new label recordings.
THE SONGS OF Marissa Nadler chill and charm in equal measure. Since first appearing on Ed Hardy’s Eclipse label back in 2004, with the blissfully haunted drift of Ballads Of Living And Dying Nadler has quietly crafted a singular surreal American folk realm in which dark melancholy and sweet romance are forever entwined.
Recently signed to Simon Raymonde’s Bella Union label (home to John Grant, Fleet Foxes, Beach House etc.) Nadler will be releasing her sixth full-length album, July in February 2014.
The album was recorded at Seattle's Avast Studio, with doom metal producer Randall Dunn and experimental American composer Eyvind Kang, and advance word suggests it will bring a new weight and terrifying depth to Nadler’s stormy emotional world.
Nadler has already shared one track from the album on her Soundcloud page and Dead City Emily is a strange, uncertain riddle of a song, its lyrics oddly reminiscent of such “unreliable” American Gothic narratives as Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper and Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived In The Castle.
