PATRONS OF THE Talking Shop Stage at the Green Man Festival on Sunday, August 21, will witness Scottish indie legends Belle And Sebastian in conversation with MOJO contributor Ben Thompson. The group have held a torch for indie pop values since their debut album, Tigermilk, burst politely onto the scene 20 years ago, but continue to offer musical surprises, as anyone who’s heard their live cover of Thin Lizzy’s The Boys Are Back In Town will attest.
There are many curious aspects to their story. Singer and songwriter Stuart Murdoch was the janitor in a church (what were the hardest bits to clean?). The group won a surprise BRIT award in 1999 but Murdoch declined to attend – why? What was it like working with Trevor Horn on 2003’s Dear Catastrophe Waitress album? What does the song Step Into My Office, Baby tell us about Belle & Sebastian’s internal HR? Are they really the greatest Scottish band ever – like, better even than The Sensational Alex Harvey Band? And what about that consistently enigmatic artwork?
