Dylan’s New Bootleg: Time To Rethink The ‘Gospel Years’?

A HUNDRED PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED live and studio recordings, including 14 unreleased songs, are the bounty to be found in the latest volume of Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series. Bootleg 13 – Trouble No More anthologises live and rehearsal recordings and studio outtakes that cast a new light on the music Dylan made between 1979 and 1981, the so-called ‘Gospel Years’.

And while non-believers may still struggle to come to terms with the scripture-spouting Dylan of this period, the Bootleg 13 recordings betray an intensity and musical power sometimes lacking in his three studio albums of the period: Slow Train Coming, Saved and Shot Of Love.

MOJO’s highlights include a stunning, completely unreleased song, Making A Liar Out Of Me; a version of Slow Train Coming’s title track from an October 2, 1979, live rehearsal with throaty horns (Dylan wouldn’t take the horns on tour in the end as his management deemed them too expensive!); and a DVD featuring extraordinary live footage from 1980 intercut with new dramatic material written by Luc Sante and performed by Academy Award nominated actor Michael Shannon.

Trouble No More: A Musical Film, directed by Jennifer Lebeau, has been selected to premiere at the prestigious 2017 New York Film Festival. We’ll tell you more about this when we’re allowed. Let’s just say that, as curveballs go, it’s Dylan-sized.

Trouble No More – The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 / 1979-1981 is released by Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings on Friday, November 3.

Formats include 2CD and 4LPS versions and a deluxe 9-disc (8CD/1DVD) box set, including a hardcover book featuring an introduction by Dylan scholar Ben Rollins with liner notes by Amanda Petrusich, Rob Bowman and Penn Jillette.

With the exception of Ye Shall Be Changed, released in 1991 on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 1-3), none of the tracks on Trouble No More have been previously released.
