The Lost Brothers (And Friends) – So Long, Marianne
Bill Ryder-Jones and The Coral’s Nick Power join Irish pair for lovely Leonard Cohen tribute, shared exclusively with MOJO.
HUSHED AND ACHING, The Lost Brothers’ version of the Songs Of Leonard Cohen classic So Long, Marianne has been spinning repeatedly in the MOJO office (if a YouTube can be said to ‘spin’). It’s a warm and wispy comfort in these immediately post-Leonard times. Film of Oisin Leech and Mark McCausland, augmented by Bill Ryder-Jones and the Coral’s Nick Power, performing the song live at Parr St. Studios in Liverpool dates from spring 2014. The track appears on their Bird Dog Tapes Volume 1, which is available now.
Produced by Bill Ryder-Jones, recorded live and undubbed, and featuring drummer Jack Prince, Bird Dog Tapes Volume 1 also includes The Lost Brothers’ Stones Throw and Old Place Of Mine, Ryder-Jones’s By The Morning I, Nick Power’s Times A Ghost and Sleeping In My Car, plus The Beatles’ In Spite Of All The Danger, Penn-Moman’s Dark End Of The Street and the traditional Wild Mountain Thyme.
"This is not an official new album or anything like that," explains Leech. "It's just a few pals singing some of their favourite tunes except someone left the tape rolling."

The Lost Brothers have been recording in Tucson, Arizona with Howe Gelb and members of Giant Sand. They play the Solstice Arts Centre, Navan, Ireland on Friday, December 9.
