A MESSAGE OF EMPOWERMENT delivered in the astringent tones of a reborn Patti Smith, British all-female neo-post-punkers Savages unleash F***ers (our asterisks – you know search engines), a live single recorded at their London Forum show on November 6 last year. Watch Giorgio Testi’s moody, magnificent footage, and marvel as the instrumental sorority of Gemma Thompson (guitar), Ayse Hassan (bass) and – emerging with especial credit – drummer Fay Milton brew a lowering, 10-minute psych-punk barrage, like Echo & The Bunnymen when they used to go a bit freeform. Over the top in more ways than one, singer Jehnny Beth does her Ian Curtis dance and urges us not to let the titular dickweeds grind us down. Who exactly are they? We don’t know and we don’t care, because we are THAT PUNK ROCK.
The film accompanies the release of a vinyl 12-inch single, Fuckers / Dream Baby Dream (Matador / Pop Noire), also available as a download. B-side is a cover of Suicide’s Dream Baby Dream. Purchase here if thou wilst.
Also, marking the one year anniversary of the release of the group’s debut album, Silence Yourself, Jehnny Beth has penned a piece titled My Year In Savages for online gabfest Huffington Post, wherein she states “I spent a year being Jehnny Beth, night and day consumed by my persona.”
Now, what exactly are we to make of that?
