Lou Reed & John Cale Remember White Light/White Heat
An in-depth look at The Velvet Underground’s avant-rock masterpiece on the eve of its deluxe reissue.
“I WOULD MATCH IT with anything by anybody, anywhere, ever. No group in the world can touch what we did.” In one of his last interviews, conducted in August this year, Lou Reed offered MOJO writer David Fricke a bullish and revealing assessment of the Velvet Underground at their challenging peak.
White Light/White Heat was the VU’s second album, completed before the departure of violist/bassist John Cale dissipated the sonic attack of the group’s breakthrough line-up. Augmented by unreleased live tracks, a complete mono mix, plus studio outtakes, it is reissued on December 9 (UK) and December 10 (US) in Vinyl, Deluxe CD and Super Deluxe CD packages.
MOJO’s in-depth article features rare pictures, interviews with Reed, Cale, Moe Tucker and the late Sterling Morrison, and the opportunity to hear four tracks, one in full and three in part. To read more, click below...
