Morrissey Salutes Lou Reed With Satellite Of Love Single
Recorded live in Vegas, tribute to the late King of New York is to emerge in multiple formats on Mozzer’s former label, Parlophone.
Morrissey has announced his sadness at the death of Lou Reed and his intention to release a live cover version of the latter’s Satellite Of Love. A setlist regular throughout 2011, the former Smiths singer’s Reed cover was recorded live at The Chelsea Ballroom in the Cosmopolitan casino and hotel in Las Vegas on November 25, 2011 and will be available digitally from December 5. A somewhat over-zealous phalanx of physical formats follow in January, with a seven-inch picture disc, a heavyweight 12" vinyl edition and “three-track digital downloads” intended, all featuring You’re Gonna Need Someone On Your Side from 1992’s LP Your Arsenal and unreleased live material.
A lifelong Reed admirer, Morrissey paid tribute to Lou on his website true-to-you.net on October 27, writing:
"No words to express the sadness at the death of Lou Reed. He had been there all of my life. He will always be pressed to my heart. Thank God for those, like Lou, who move within their own laws, otherwise imagine how dull the world would be. I knew the Lou of recent years and he was always full of good heart. His music will outlive time itself. We are all timebound, but today, with the loss of liberating Lou, life is a pigsty."
This new single is to be released on the Parlophone label. Begging the question that now Morrissey's profile is at its highest for some time (sales of his frenziedly-received Autobiography touched a record-breaking 35,000 a week after release and it was recently announced that the audiobook will be read by actor David Morrissey) could the long-pursued new record deal be in prospect? Long time guitarist Boz Boorer, one of few close associates to escape censure in Autobiography, did recently tell website God Is In The TV: “we haven’t made a record in a few years, despite having an arsenal of new material.”
For those unable to wait, here’s Morrissey playing Satellite Of Love at Glastonbury 2011, complete with the curious declaration at 2mins 19, “I cannot stand George Alagiah.” And while we’re on, get well soon after your recent "concussion, whiplash and an arm injury", Moz.
