THERE IS SOMETHING about Anna Calvi’s use of melody that evokes a different time - a time of magnificent obsessions, smouldering looks and complicated romantic entanglement. It is this ‘50s aesthetic that informs the new video that accompanies Suddenly, her beguiling next single from her acclaimed second album One Breath. Indeed, the cinematic quality of Calvi’s music comes to fore on a new video by photographer and director Emma Nathan, who has worked with Anna for most of her career.

“I've been fortunate enough to collaborate with Anna visually throughout both of her albums and through this a visual language has developed that accompanies her musical aesthetic,” says Nathan. “The song connected with me in a filmic way, it spoke of black and white, late ’40s, classic, emotional, Billy Wilder and Douglas Sirk. These were the images I got when listening to Suddenly, those of deeply withheld emotion and extreme release.”

Suddenly is released as a single on December 23 on Domino Records and comes with a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Fire as a B-side. It can be pre-ordered on 7-inch here.
