David Bowie – Love Is Lost (Hello Steve Reich Mix By James Murphy For The DFA)
The Thin White Duke gets his Halloween on with great new track and “dark and sinister” puppet video. Watch it now.
WHILE DAVID BOWIE has steadfastly refused to do interviews, he has not been shy about promoting his Next Day album by unleashing a string of striking and at times controversial videos. For the most part these have been high-end productions graced by thesp friends including Gary Oldman and Tilda Swinton. Now, however, Bowie has taken an opposite approach and gone DIY, producing a video at his Manhattan home that stars the man himself and a couple of his puppets.
Shot by his assistant Jimmy King and aided and abetted by Coco Schwab, the video for Love Is Lost (given an electro-pop make-over by James Murphy for the The Next Day Extra three-disc set, was made on a hand-held camera and edited over a three night stint. The total cost, according to Bowie’s PR man, was the $12.99 that it cost to buy the thumb drive on which the finished video was downloaded.
The result is a dark and rather sinister affair seemingly tailor-made for Halloween. Moreover, if you’ve ever wondered what David Bowie’s bathroom looks like then it’s a thriller.
In other news, on October 29 Bowie also posted a new photograph on his site, shot by Jimmy King. The photo is accompanied by a quote from his 1971 tune Moonage Daydream (“Keep your ‘lectric eye on me babe”) and also promises “Good news coming”. What can he possibly mean?
