Savages – Husbands
London post-punk firebrands release new video to coincide with upcoming tour.
AT A TIME WHEN THE musical community has been woefully and inexplicably short of oppositional spikiness despite our recent global near-meltdown, London-based post-punk four-piece Savages are an exception, offering a confrontational vibe that is all too rare, and a sound to match. Their polemic may not be anchored to a fixed ideology, but is best described as a wake-up call to a generation of increasingly disengaged somnambulists.
“We must teach ourselves new ways of POSITIVE MANIPULATIONS.” Savages’ manifesto
“SAVAGES is not trying to give you something you didn’t have already,” they write, rumbustiously on their website. “It is calling within yourself to something you buried ages ago, it is an attempt to reveal and reconnect your PHYSICAL and EMOTIONAL self and give you the urge to experience your life differently, your girlfriends, your husbands, your jobs, your erotic life and the place music occupies in your life.
“Because we must teach ourselves new ways of POSITIVE MANIPULATIONS, music and words are aiming to strike like lightning, like a punch in the face, a determination to understand the WILL and DESIRES of the self.”
Their campaign for music and words to “strike like lightning” continues with the release of this new video for Husbands, a track from their impressive debut album, Silence Yourself.
Black and white visual frenzy involving all manner of unsettling imagery and, indeed, a surfeit of maggots, it combines the heartfelt attack of PJ Harvey with the melodic swirl of Siouxsie Sioux and a dash of Crass-inspired minimalism.
“The noise is a constant distraction,” proclaim their T-shirts. So too are Savages, but in a good way.
They tour the UK next month…
