Aretha Franklin Graces Latest Muscle Shoals Film Clip

THE LATEST TEASER FOR the forthcoming Muscle Shoals/FAME Studios documentary film, premiering exclusively here at MOJO, provides a rare glimpse of famously reclusive soul legend Aretha Franklin as she recalls the records she made at Alabama’s FAME Studios. The studio’s all-white backing group The Swampers, featuring keyboards maestro Spooner Oldham and the notoriously in-the-pocket rhythm duo of Roger Hawkins and David Hood, are described as the providers of “the deepest and most intense R&B of the era”.

Greg Camalier’s documentary – accorded 4 out of 5 stars in the current issue of MOJO magazine – features brilliant interviews with the likes of Bono, Greg Allman, and FAME hitmaker Clarence Carter, who notes that “you never thought about who was black and who was white”.

But it’s the emergence from the shadows of studio owner Rick Hall that is perhaps the film’s greatest revelation, with eye-popping tales of Hall’s hardscrabble upbringing (his mother left home to become a prostitute, his father died in a tractor accident) poignantly framing his achievement in producing and facilitating some of the greatest music of that, or any other era.
