Nadine Shah – Runaway
A smouldering, heartbreaking tale of adultery and emotional peril. Revisit a scintillating live performance by the distaff Nick Cave.
TYNESIDE-BORN, LONDON-BASED singer-songwriter Nadine Shah has spent large chunks of the last year on the road, building up a considerable reputation as an arresting live performer. It is a point borne out further by this recent appearance on the BBC’s Review Show where presenter Kirsty Wark likened her to both Marianne Faithfull and Nick Cave prior to Shah’s performance of Runaway.
The track – a previous single – documents the collapse of a marriage in the first person, Shah pulling no punches as she assumes the role of the wronged wife facing her adulterous husband.
It is the 27-year-old singer’s unflinching way with words that animates her debut long-player, Love Your Dumb And Mad – a previous Album Of The Week on this site in July – which tackles deeply personal issues (including the suicide of a former lover) alongside the everyday perils of modern life.
Aching Bones, her first single released almost a year ago – has also just been re-released to coincide with her latest run of shows which kicks off tonight, October 2, at the Arts Centre in Colchester. A full list of tour dates can be found here.
