EXCLUSIVE: Elbow Announce New Album, Tour and Live DVD

LAST YEAR THEY WROTE the BBC's Olympic theme First Steps and played the Games’ closing ceremony. Now after a period of calm, Elbow are to return with a new album and tour. First their sixth LP - due for release on March 10 next year. It’s being recorded at Blueprint Studios, Salford, with production and mixing by group keyboardist Craig Potter. Preliminary work was undertaken over a fortnight in Bristol’s Real World studios in 2012 with frontman Guy Garvey citing the “clinical minimalism” of Gothenberg’s Little Dragon as an influence.
“There are some upfront, dry, vintage synthesisers involved,” he told MOJO’s Martin Aston. “I really want to write something that people can explore, something for the headphones or the car.” He also suggested there will be a moodier tone lyrically: “It’s still about escapism with us, but you can still be inky and noir-ish without writing only about frustration.” The album may include the song Charge, a cinematic portrait of age lamenting lost youth that the band played on their last UK tour.
Elbow begin their British arena tour – their first live dates for over a year - on April 5, 2014 at the Birmingham LG Arena, taking in Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Nottingham, it ends at the London O2 Arena on April 16. They’ll also be releasing the CD/ DVD package Live At Jodrell Bank a document of their summer 2012 show at the famous Cheshire radio telescope.
