During the '60s and '70s, Muscle Shoals and FAME Studios were home to some of soul music's greatest recordings. Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, Etta James, Solomon Burke, Millie Jackson, Candi Staton and Bobby Womack were just some of the artists who made the Muscle Shoals sound one of the most coveted in popular music. Rhythmically tight, instrumentally sparse and propelled by a mix of gospel-fervour, country balladry and a funky strain of Ray Charles/James Brown blues, it was a sound that would give birth to Southern soul and later attact some of rock's biggest guns including The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Traffic. Now, a new documentary tells the story of how this small Alabama town became one of America's recording sweet spots. With contributions from Keith Richards, Aretha Franklin, Steve Winwood, Mick Jagger, Bono and legendary producer Rick Hall, the film is due for release on October 25.
