The Stepkids – The Lottery
Crack Connecticut psych-soulmen get in it to win it.
TAKEN FROM THEIR new LP Troubadour ( out in September), New England's psychedelic soul band The Stepkids evolve the sound of 2011's self-titled debut with a strutting meditation on life's unknowable, random nature. It's smooth but blurred round the edges, like it's been mixing cough mixture with its bourbon, exhibiting a '70s disco sheen not dissimilar to the summer's longing to Get Lucky, or maybe Gaucho-era Steely Dan. As per the band's crack session pedigree, the tune veers dreamily to the jazz-funk-hand-side (check the guitars at 2.27) but doesn't give in wholly... though that's bound to happen one day.
