WHAT A BUSY BOY Elvis Costello is right now. Not content with forging new collaborative bonds with The Roots, on their excellent album in concert, Wise Up Ghost, the bespectacled bard now crops up on a soon-come record by Gov’t Mule. Shout!, the September 13 album by the US jam band institutions – newly resettled on the Don Was-reinvigorated Blue Note label – features a second, bonus disc of the tracks re-recorded with guest vocalists including Costello, Dr John, Steve Winwood, Ben Harper and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James.

The Costello track, Funny Little Tragedy, could almost have been written with Costello in mind – it’s a very Costello title, is it not? – and sizzles with snarling, punky edge. A surprise new bag for the group who grew out of a ’90s reformation line-up of the Allmann Brothers Band.

Here’s the track…

“This album puts the spotlight on the new songs and the way that we interpret them, which hinges on the unique chemistry we’ve developed as a band,” says Gov’t Mule guitarist/vocalist Warren Haynes. “No one’s done this before, which is exciting,” says Haynes, “but it’s even more exciting actually listening to these artists sing our songs. Their performances bring new ideas, energy and sometimes even different meanings to every number.”
