Celebrate the Sub Pop label's silver jubilee with our 25-track playlist.
The legendary record label that bought us Nirvana, Mudhoney, The Shins, The Postal Service, Fleet Foxes and ooh, everyone, Zen Guerilla included, celebrate their silver jubilee this year. Since opening their first office in downtown Seattle in 1988, the label formed by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman kick started grunge and championed bands with a zeal at times inversely proportionate to their business acumen. Their first record release, the Sub Pop 100 compilation (following some cassettes-only comps that only Thurston Moore still has) isn’t, alas, on Spotify (nor are Codeine nor the new Daughn Gibson – come on SP!) so our playlist tribute starts instead with their first non-compilation releases, from the awesome Green River’s Dry As A Bone EP and (a not too shoddy live version of) the first Sound Garden single. And it only gets better from there.
