Last week MOJO had the pleasure of being invited on to the judging panel for the Green Man Rising competition. During what was one of the hottest evenings of the year, we enjoyed melting in the confines of Camden’s Dublin Castle as we watched six acts vying to secure the opening slot on the main stage of this year’s Green Man festival. Beating off stiff competition, the eventual winners were Derbyshire-based instrumental three-piece Haiku Salut!, self-styled progenitors of ‘baroque-pop-folktronic-neo-classical-something-or-other’.

The trio reprised chunks of their debut album Tricolore, recently released on the acclaimed How Does It Feel To Be Loved label, mesmerizing the crowd into moments of silence with their intoxicating blend of delicate electronic textures and collision of curious instruments.

Those qualities animate Glockelbar, a track packed with child-like wonderment created by the rare combination of accordion, glockenspiel and synth whooshes. The accompanying video – directed by acclaimed Japanese animator Mitsuo Toyama - simply adds to the sense of deep joy. Indeed, if Amélie Poulain made music, she’d be in Haiku Salut!
