Numero Group DJs Unveil Mixtape Of Soul Treasures
The Chicago label, in cahoots with ace Neder-fest Le Guess Who?, premiere ace new collection via MOJO.
NO-ONE DIGS crates like Chicago’s Numero Group imprint, the label that’s brought you the best in overlooked soul, R&B, sounds international and beyond since its founding in 2003. Here MOJO is glad to unveil an exclusive new mix by the Numero Group DJs – that’s founders Ken Shipley and Rob Sevier – taking in slept-on cuts by Syl Johnson, Willie Wright, Cindy and The Playmates and others rescued from obscurity by the label.
“We wanted to create a mix for discoveries and for those with a deep knowledge alike.”

“We wanted to create a mix that would be useful for both those totally unfamiliar with the label and our discoveries and for those with a deep knowledge of the label alike,” Sevier tells MOJO.
You can enjoy the Numero DJ experience live this November 22, when Shipley and Sevier play the closing night of eclectic Utrecht music festival Le Guess Who?, though this gig will differ from the mixtape, says Sevier.
“Our DJ sets are a hodgepodge of past releases, releases in progress, distant future releases, and impossible or attempted but failed releases,” he explains. “However, they are naturally selected for a maximum of crowd enjoyment and discerning dance-floor filling.”
He adds they’ll be making a beeline for Utrecht’s MEGA Record fair (“a dream of mine since I was a small child, in record-collecting terms,” says Sevier) plus LGW? performances from Kamasi Washington, Viet Cong and Shabazz Palaces are on the agenda (Ariel Pink, Sunn O))) and Annette Peacock will also appear). He’s also “curious to see what Faust and Magma are up to these days! If Faust happens to be doing IV I will be particularly enthusiastic.”
