IT’S NO WONDER fans obsess over Fleetwood Mac’s chequered relationship history, the group do it themselves according to Stevie Nicks – but the singer believes bands are “cooler” when you mix genders. A classic shot of Fleetwood Mac on the cover of MOJO 260, on sale in the UK from Tuesday, May 26.

With all five members of the current line-up speaking in individual, extensive interviews in the new edition of MOJO (July 2015/ #260), out now in the UK, the singer describes the forces that inspired her group’s enduring “romantic spell”.

Despite all the romantic tension, break-ups, divorces and bad feelings that have peppered Fleetwood Mac’s history, Nicks tells MOJO’s Jim Irvin that the explosive mix has improved their music.

“I think every band should have a girl in it, because it’s always going to make for cooler stuff going on than if it’s just a bunch of guys,” she declares.

“It’s ultimately more romantic, no matter what. Even if nobody is going together, it still casts a romantic spell.”

And when they are “going together” it has fuelled some of her band’s greatest songs… in fact it still does.

“It was totally important and everybody is still writing about everybody else,” Nicks says of her band’s material. “It will never stop. Once you have that, even long after the couples are broken up, you still have that – when you sit down to write a couple of songs, that news from 100 years ago still creeps in.”
