Christine McVie: “I Was So Disorientated Making Rumours”
All five members of Fleetwood Mac in the new edition of MOJO (July 2015/ #260), out now in the UK.
WHILE TO MANY it is a masterpiece, for years Christine McVie could not enjoy Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, describing its creation as “disorientating”.
With all five members of the current line-up speaking in individual, extensive interviews in the new edition of MOJO (July 2015/ #260), out now in the UK, the singer discusses her decision to re-join the band after quitting the group in 1998 and takes a look back at her career with the group, which began in 1971.
A key songwriter for Fleetwood Mac after Mick Fleetwood and then-husband John McVie encouraged her to join the group, the singer played a key part in the making of the band’s 1977 album, though with her own divorce and the breakup of bandmates Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, it was often hard to see the upside.
“Stevie and Lindsey were more abrasive then than they are now.”

“It was so disorientating. With the loss of a marriage. Mick was going through terrible times with Jenny [Boyd, wife],” she says of the personal strife around the sessions.
“Stevie and Lindsey were more abrasive then than they are now. That’s still pretty abrasive. It’s like putting a wet hand into a socket whenever they meet. They do not get on at all. That’s the bottom line.”
