HAVING BEGUN HIS career as a live DJ for the likes of The Clash, before making his name in the ’80s as a dub producer and, later, esteemed sonic manipulator for such as Blur and Primal Scream, there was bound to come a time when dub Adrian Sherwood had to take stock of his various back-catalogue recordings. However, rather than just file away his master tapes in a lead-lined bunker, the producer has compiled some of his earliest experiments in sound on an extraordinary new album, Sherwood At The Controls Volume 1: 1979–1984, which is released on Monday (April 6).

“Truthfully, I’d forgotten about loads of the tunes on this!” Sherwood tells MOJO of the collection. “This represents the early period of learning my way round a studio, and a big learning curve for me. It’s a really diverse selection: from The Fall to Prince Far I; The Slits to African Head Charge. It's great to see these tracks out there again.”

It’s certainly worth a listen as reviewer Ian Harrison explains in our new issue (May 15, #258), praising the “sonic signature, the urge to deconstruct, and the blending of esoteric mind states and unignorable physicality” behind Sherwood’s mixes.

Ahead of next week’s release, Sherwood has put together a playlist of the whole collection, featuring The Slits, Prince Far I, The Fall, Mark Stewart and more, including several exclusives not previously online before. So let the sonic adventuring begin…
