Laura Marling Premieres New Album With Raw Title Track
Listen to Short Movie, the title track from the beguiling folkstress's forthcoming album – out March 23.
LAURA MARLING WILL return with her fifth album Short Movie in the spring, the singer’s fifth in seven years – and you can listen to its title track below now. The record will be released on March 23 and is a result of the otherwise prodigious 25 year-old taking some time out to enjoy an “extended period of reflection”.
“I realised that I hadn’t been in a place for longer than two or three weeks since I was 16.”

“I realised that I hadn’t been in a place for longer than two or three weeks since I was 16,” Marling explains. “I thought, I wonder what will happen if I try and root myself somewhere? Look back over the past eight years...”
What transpired was a more electric-sounding album than her previous efforts, as Marling self-produced her work for the first time.
Recorded in London with her regular band, the self-helmed sessions were a “pleasant but anxious” experience for the singer-songwriter as she sought to “demystify production”.
Portending great things for its parent album, Short Movie the track has a swirling intensity conveyed by a raw, charging overlay of instruments, while Marling’s vocal has a laconic aggression that adds edge to the fragility and charm that's made her so engaging previously.
“Just a girl that can play guitar” – as the song’s lyric has it? On this evidence, she's so much more than that.
