Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways
Dave Grohl & co. harvest the eighth Foo Fighters LP via an all-star jaunt across America.
PERHAPS IT’S THE PRESENCE of all-star interviewees/ collaborators like Joe Walsh, Rick Nielsen and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, or the experience of retracing his musical roots, but Sonic Highways’ concept – the album was recorded at eight landmark studios across America while filming the HBO rockumentary series of the same name – has given Dave Grohl renewed purpose. The blueprint has not been rewritten, but songs Something From Nothing and The Feast And The Famine dose the Foos format (anthemic moves and occasional heavyosity) with steroids, while Grohl’s earnest delivery redeems the occasional detour into cliché (as witnessed on closing track I Am A River). Better is the dark Subterranean, all the more moving for its understated edge, while What Did I Do? re-imagines All You Need Is Love as performed by Lynyrd Skynyrd. It's a loving, ridiculous and sublime love letter to Big Rock that sums-up the motivation behind the Sonic Highways project.
