The unmistakable, frangible tones of Neil Young ring out across the stadium, a moment of exquisite intimacy in the middle of one of the biggest shows of the biggest rock tour then undertaken: Crosby, Stills, Nash And Young, reunited, across America and beyond in 1974. Nothing on that notorious tour was done by halves – David Crosby even packed two girfriends for the trip – yet for the duration of this beautiful version of Only Love Can Break Your Heart, the song debuted on Young’s 1970 solo album After The Gold Rush, nothing exists beyond or outside of the music.

The song features on CSNY 1974, a new box set of the music the quartet made on that tour, curated by Graham Nash and CSN&Y photographer/collaborator Joel Bernstein. It’s out on July 8 via Rhino, and features three CDs of live tracks and a DVD of unreleased footage shot at Wembley Stadium and the Capital Centre, Landover, Maryland.
