Willis Earl Beal – The Axeman
Country-soul gem leads the release of surprise new mini-album. Hear it now.
SOULFUL PURVEYOR OF righteous Chicago R&B, Willis Earl Beal has made a habit of surprising fans by regularly releasing new tracks online. His latest collection, the 8-track A Place That Doesn't Exist, was posted to SoundCloud last week – a "peace offering" that followed the cancellation of his February 2014 European tour.
The Axeman, a gorgeous lo-fi tale "of a crazy little man I used to know", is its centrepiece, echoing the bucolic country-soul of Tupelo Honey-era Van Morrison and the backwoods mysticism of Link Wray's Link Wray.
