SINCE EMERGING FROM Amsterdam's anarcho-squat scene in 1979, regenerating and underground entity The Ex have self-sustained, pushing forward with a shifting output that, over 25 albums and 1,800-odd performances, has encompassed post-punk needling, music from Africa and improv collaborations with Tortoise, Sonic Youth, The Mekons and others (plus, John Peel dug them and they were briefly signed to Ron Johnson records - recommendation if ever there was such a thing). They're still hard at it, as demonstrated by new track How Thick You Think; a convulsing, rhythm-driven twister to irk and goad, it's out now on seven-inch.

The group are about to play five dates of The Ex Festival across the Netherlands in the company of Thurston Moore, Peter Brötzmann and others; it begins in Groningen on February 26 and concludes in Utrecht on March 2. An eight-date UK tour follows, commencing on April 16 at London’s XOYO and including stops in Cardiff, Birmingham and Glasgow. See here for full details.
