HE MAY BE the kind of guy who rubs peanut butter on his torso, wears see-through strides and once said, “I'm a real woman – just like Catherine Deneuve,” but Iggy Pop certainly loves Christmas. In 2011 he appeared on Michel Legrand’s LP Noel! Noel!! Noel!!! singing Little Drummer Boy and, here again he gets his Bing Crosby on with this straight from the heart, only a little wiggy, deep-voiced rendition of Bing’s Yuletide fave White Christmas.
It’s from Psych-Out Christmas, a laudable new LP from the Cleopatra label where an international crew of lysergically-aware acts share their interpretations of those old Chrimbo faves. There’s San Fran’s Sleepy Sun, whose take on What Child Is This seems to plumb the deep myths of the tree-worshipping pagan Solstice festival that predates Jesus’ birthday, while NY trip-rockers Psychic Ills soak their version of Chuck Berry's Run Rudolph Run in ’shroom-and–downers-marinaded engine oil, delivering the line, “All I want for Christmas is a rock and roll electric guitar” with quiet menace. Also on hand, Dead Meadow, The Fuzztones, Quintron & Miss Pussycat and more!
Iggy, meanwhile, will also host BBC6 programmes on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. And who wants to see him wearing a Father Christmas hat?
